SMITH, REGINALD

Date of Death:   21 May 1941, age 20
Son of Walter and Adalyne Smith, of Aston, Sheffield.
H.M.S. Juno was attacked by an Italian CANT Z.1007 aircraft from 50th group, flown by Lt. Morassuti, as she steamed with the Mediterranean Fleet against the German sea-borne invasion of Crete and sank 30 nautical miles south-east of Crete on 21 May 1941.   At the time of her attack and sinking, HMS Juno was commanded by Cdr. St. John Reginald Joseph Tyrwhitt and would have had a complement of 183 to 218 seamen and officers.   It is figured that 116 souls lost their lives after 3 high-power explosions split her in two, sinking in around 97 seconds.

SURGEY, STANLEY ARTHUR

Date of Death: 14 December 1944, age 21
Son of Ernest and Edith Surgey, of 52 Ashley Grove, Aston, Sheffield
On 14 December 1944, Aldenham was sunk by a naval mine in the Adriatic Sea off  Pag
Island after she led a Royal Navy force in a bombardment mission against targets on the island of Pag and near the town of Karlobag in support of  the Yugoslav Partisans.   Although the rest of the force came to pick up survivors, cold weather and severe damage to Aldenham permitted the rescue of only 63 of her crew.   Her wreck, broken in two by the explosion, was discovered in 1999–2000.   It is a war grave, where 126 crew members and two Yugoslav Partisans aboard Aldenham at the time of the mining died.  She was the last Royal Navy Destroyer lost in World War II.
