WOOD, GEORGE RAYMOND
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 148 Squadron

Date of Death:  04 July 1944, age 22
Son of John James Wood and Ellen Coates Wood of 2 Rose Cottage, Swallow Nest, Sheffield, Yorkshire.
Towards the end of the war when the Poles rebelled against the Germans in Warsaw, Flight Lieutenant Wood made long flights carrying supplies.   All these operations took place over mountains at night.   On his 57th operational flight the plane was hit by a German fighter and set on fire.    Flt. Lt. Wood gave the order to abandon the plane and five members of his crew did so as he tried to hold it steady.   All landed safely and were repatriated after the war.  When the plane crashed Fl. Lt. Wood was killed together with the rear gunner.
