Grenoside and District Local History Group

In 2011 our Secretary, Ann Key, gave a talk about Aston Manor to Grenoside and District Local History Group at their headquarters in Grenoside Community Centre, Sheffield.    Arrangements were subsequently made for a visit by members of the Grenoside Group to Aston, and our own members to Grenoside.

The Grenoside Group visited us on Monday evening 25th June.   We met in the Reading Room and they joined us on a guided walk through the village of Aston, including a visit to All Saints Church and a short talk on its history.   We returned to the Reading Room for refreshments.

On Monday evening 2nd July we visited Grenoside where we had a guided walk through Old Grenoside.   We had not realised how much industry went on there in the past, including making steel and similar trades such as nail making, file cutting and making the crucible pots in which the steel is made.   On our return to the Community Centre we were treated to excellent tea and cakes made by the ladies of the Group and a display of their many researches into the history of Grenoside and surroundings.   We hope that communications between our two groups will continue.
